1. Water
   Even though most modern-day mechanical watches come with a certain degree of waterproofness, there are still some things to take note of before bringing your beloved timepiece for a dip in the pool.
   
   Unless you have a dive watch like the Rolex Submariner which is rated for 300m, chances are your wristwatch would be more comfortable going for a swim in the pool. But before you do, here are a few things to take note of.
   
   Firstly, if your watch comes with a screw-down crown, make sure it is screwed down before getting into the water.
   
   Next, once you’re in the water, make sure that you do not use any functions of your watch such as the chronograph which would require you to unscrew the crown, potentially letting water into your watch.
   
   Lastly, during your regular watch servicing, make sure to have your gaskets replaced if they’re worn out.

2. Stay away from magnets
   Have you noticed your watch running faster or slower recently? If the answer is yes, magnets might just be the culprit.
   
   Magnets are everywhere these days – from laptops to the smartphone in your pocket, to even the magnetic clasp in handbags, you just can’t avoid magnets. We have the highest levels of magnetic fields around us today, and it is just going to get higher with new tech being introduced into our everyday lives.
   
   Magnets are such an issue for mechanical watches that watchmaking companies have even designed watches that are resistant to magnetism, such as Rolex’s Milgauss.

   That being said, you should still try your best to keep a safe distance between your watches & any magnets as magnetism will very likely impact your watch’s timekeeping accuracy. Avoid resting your watch on top of anything that might contain magnets and you should be good to go.
3. Shock
   This might come as a shock to you (pun intended), but did you know that the shock generated from swinging a golf club to strike a golf ball might actually damage your watch?
   
   When the club hits the golf ball, it sends a shock up the shaft of the golf club to the golfer’s hand, and then to the watch. Although unlikely, the forceful impact might actually cause parts to come loose therefore causing the watch to malfunction.
   
   Another obvious example of shock, is dropping your watch. We know mistakes happen, but this might be a very costly mistake and it is best being avoided. Apart from likely dings on your case, delicate components like the hairspring & balance wheel might break, leaving your watch unusable until professional repair.
4. Avoid scratches
   While this might be a personal preference, some watch lovers actually fancy the aesthetic of a well-worn watch. They feel that the scratches reflect their own personal identity and simply by looking at the watch, others will know that the wearer and watch have had a long history together.
   
   However, if you’re on the other party who loves to keep their watches scratch-free, here is a tip for you: Don’t rest your watch on hard surfaces. Instead, opt for a dedicated area with a soft surface like a microfiber cloth, where you can rest your watch without any worries. If a soft surface is not available and you must put your watch down, consider resting it on its crown to reduce the surface area which is in contact with the surface.
   
   Also, if you’re considering desk diving with your watch on your wrist, you might want to reconsider. The repeated movements along your desk coupled with the weight of your arm might cause scratches to appear faster than you could imagine.
5. Service your watch
   Luxury watches are like luxury automobiles and require care and maintenance to keep their performance top-notch.
   
   As such, each manufacturer has its recommended servicing guideline, but as a general rule of thumb, do have your watch serviced once every 5 years. Servicing your watch will not only likely increase the lifespan of your timepiece, but it will also ensure proper timekeeping & functionality.
