FANCY COLOURED DIAMONDS - FOR A LOOK THAT ISN'T PLAIN
What Are Fancy Coloured Diamonds?
The whiter or more transparent the diamond, the more valuable it is. That is mostly true but when it comes to fancy colour diamonds, their value generally increases with the strength and intensity of the colour. Large and vividly coloured diamonds are extremely rare and valuable and that each fancy colour diamond is one of a kind.
The 4Cs – Cut, Carat, Colour and Clarity are still key factors in determining the value of a fancy colour diamond but there are slight variations.
Certain cuts can intensify certain colours. For example, radiant cuts can intensify the yellow colour in diamonds and as we all know, the more intense the colour, the more valuable the diamond is.
Same as for normal diamonds, fancy colour diamonds are also more valuable with bigger carat size.
For fancy colour diamonds, the most valuable and rarest will be the saturated pinks, blues, and greens. The most common fancy diamond colour is brown and they were commonly known as “cognac” or “champagne”. The second most common fancy colour diamond is yellow. Yellow diamonds are also sometimes known as “canary”.
For fancy colour diamonds, it does not matter as much if it is of a low clarity grade as the colour of the diamond is most important. However, if the inclusions threaten the gem’s durability, then the value of the fancy colour diamond will decrease.
